Hello from Levuka

After a 2 hour delay while they replaced a leaking hydraulic part on the plane we left for Nadi Airport on Fiji at 1.30 am 13th April LA time. We eventually touched down around 11 hours later at 8.30am 15th April Fiji time and set about deciding where we were going to go!

With some help from a lady at the airport we got on a bus to Suva, the capital, and 4 long and sweaty hours later we arrived and checked into our hotel. Our plan was to go buy tickets to get a bus to Levuka the following day, but the bus had taken so long the office was closed. The hotel reception said it would be ok, we could get the bus, just go to the bus station at 4am to catch it….

So at 4am we got a taxi to the bus station, and half an hour later the bus arrived (that’s Island time!). After some discussion with the driver we established that we couldn’t buy a ticket, but it didn’t matter because it was the wrong bus anyway and we didn’t need to get one until around 12 midday!

So after going back to bed we got up, went and got our tickets and explored Suva a bit. There wasn’t a lot to see there but the market was nice and the streets were busy and interesting. We caught the bus (again, about 40 minutes late!) to Natovi, where it reversed onto an old ferry to take us to Ovalau. The bus journey was better than the last one, a bit less hot but a lot more bumpy!

We’re currently in a hotel in the old capital “city” of Levuka, which is on the east coast of Ovalau, which is itself just east of the main island of Fiji, Viti Levu. We’ve just been for dinner at a nice restaurant, and will spend 2 nights here before getting a boat to Caqelai for 4 nights.
